An interesting feature of Notecards is the ability set timers for your study session. For example, you can set a timer to automatically flip to the back of each card after 5 seconds as a way to force quick recall. Let's take a detailed look at how to configure study timers and what options we have.
The Power of Study Timers
Before we get into the specifics of how to configure study timers, we need to know why we would bother! Ultimately they are quite flexible and there are almost certainly ways of using them that we have not thought of. However, here are are some ideas to get you started:
- Flip to the back of cards after several seconds to force yourself to remember quickly
- Flip to the back of cards and then mark it correct after several seconds so you can study without touching the device (except to mark a card wrong). If you also turn on spoken cards, you can even use this to study without looking at the device.
- If you are using the app to keep notes about a timed presentation you are giving, you can setup a timer to mark each card correct on the front for however long each slide is.
Editing the Study Timers
Each time you are starting a new study session, you have the opportunity to customize the timers.
Tapping on the timer section will reveal the time configuration screen.
Here you you can tap the action for either the front or back and choose what you want to happen. If you choose an action, you will also be presented with a selection for a number of seconds. This is the amount of time the app will wait after arriving on that side of the card before it performs the action.
Once you are satisfied with your settings, tap “Save”.
When studying with active timers, you will see a circle immediately to the left of the “Done” button.
This circle starts out full and shrinks until it disappears. At that point the action will be performed.
